LDN 43 Bat Nebula
A dark nebula that looks uncannily like a bat in the sky — wings, head, mouth, ears and eyes are all discernible.
Winding through the star fields of Ophiuchus, LDN 43 is an inconspicuous dark nebula and star-forming region containing the embedded reflection nebulae RNO 90 and RNO 91, lit by young stellar objects (YSOs). It has drawn considerable attention from professional astronomers seeking to unravel the mysteries of star formation, and at roughly 520 light-years it is one of the closest star-forming regions to us.
