NGC 1316 Fornax A & NGC 1317 Fornax B — Interacting Galaxies
In the southern Fornax galaxy cluster, the best-known galaxy besides the grand barred spiral NGC 1365 is NGC 1316, Fornax A. Though an elliptical (lenticular) galaxy, its center is laced with the kind of dust normally seen in barred spirals — thought to be the remains of another barred spiral it devoured long ago. Fornax A has now also begun consuming its neighbor NGC 1317 (Fornax B), composing a remarkable scene.
At the lower left of the frame is NGC 1310, another barred spiral of Fornax.
