M83, also known as the Southern Pinwheel Galaxy, is a spiral galaxy located in the constellation Hydra, approximately 15 million light-years away from Earth. As a barred spiral galaxy, it features a prominent bar structure and symmetrical spiral arms, with a diameter of about 50,000 light-years.
M83 is one of the closest starburst galaxies to Earth, with active star-forming regions scattered throughout its spiral arms, showcasing stunning blue star clusters and pink hydrogen ionization regions. The galaxy was discovered in the 18th century by Nicolas-Louis de Lacaille and was later cataloged as the 83rd entry in the Messier catalog.
