NGC 1532 Haley's Coronet — Edge-on Barred Spiral
NGC 1532 is a barred spiral galaxy seen edge-on from Earth, located in Eridanus. It drew wide attention with the discovery of supernova SN 1981A. The galaxy has a boxy bulge, which tells us it in fact harbors a bar — easy to spot in face-on barred spirals, but in an edge-on system like NGC 1532 it takes careful inspection to discern. The galaxy is also interacting with several nearby dwarfs; the gravitational tug-of-war with the irregular dwarf NGC 1531 in particular has raised curious plumes of gas off NGC 1532's disk. Incidentally, NGC 1532 is a member of the Fornax galaxy cluster!
