NGC 1333 — Embryo of the Stars

After half a year without publishing an image, I felt a little rusty when I reopened PixInsight.

This one is NGC 1333 in Perseus, often called the "Embryo Nebula." It is an active star-forming region: within vast dark clouds of dust, young stars and a blue reflection nebula are wrapped together, as if the stars were still being conceived.

The raw data was of very good quality, so even though my feel for the process hadn't fully come back, the final result turned out quite a bit better than I expected. I had also once tried having an AI drive PixInsight to process this same image (I'll write a separate post comparing the two), and after processing it myself this time, the difference is actually quite noticeable.

AI can certainly produce something that "looks pretty good" very quickly, but when it comes to the layering of the dark clouds, color balance, highlight control, and the overall mood, working through it step by step myself still gets me closer to the look I want.
