The First Step in Learning PixInsight: Blink, WBPP and ImageIntegration

Fellow enthusiasts often write to ask me: where should the first step in learning PixInsight begin? This article lays out the three most basic steps, giving newcomers a clear starting line.

The three steps

  1. Use Blink to check your images: go through the light frames, dark frames, flat frames, and flat darks (or bias frames) one by one.
  2. Use WBPP to calibrate and register the images.
  3. Use ImageIntegration to integrate the registered images.

Walk through these three steps and you’ve completed the first step of learning PixInsight.

A few reminders

Beginners, please don’t use SubframeSelector in place of Blink to judge image quality. SubframeSelector has many pitfalls and isn’t suited to beginners for first-line image selection.

Many beginners find preprocessing painfully fussy and think: why not just throw all the files into APP and be done with it? There’s nothing wrong with that thinking — APP really is convenient. But when your calibrated and integrated images keep having problems, you’ll be glad you broke the preprocessing steps out. WBPP has already simplified away most of the error-prone steps, and the ones left that can still go wrong are usually problems with the image itself or the parameter settings — so keeping the steps separate makes it relatively easy to pinpoint where the problem lies.

Finally, whether you’re a novice or a veteran, understanding light frames, dark frames, flat frames, and flat darks (or bias frames) is all essential background knowledge for astro image processing. If you don’t yet understand these when you’re just starting out, that’s fine — this foundational knowledge is usually explained in detail in the pinned posts of the major community groups, and it’s well worth spending some time catching up on.
