When you’re color-grading in post, have you ever run into these frustrations:

  • You’re not sure whether the colors of the image you processed look anywhere close on someone else’s screen?
  • The visual intent you want to convey through color — can it be expressed correctly?
  • When you output the image physically, there’s a huge gap between the print and what’s shown on screen?

The Pitfalls I Fell Into Myself

I once processed astro images for over a year without doing any monitor color management. During that time I kept running into the same thing: the images I edited looked very different in color and contrast between my computer screen and my phone; and even on the same computer, opening the same image in PI and PS, they looked different.

I could never figure out where the cause lay, until I hired an expert to calibrate my monitors and gained a rudimentary understanding of the relevant color-management knowledge — only then were those color problems finally solved.
