The Jevons Paradox: Is AI Making My Life Easier, or Just Busier?

Lately I’ve often found myself mulling over a question: is AI actually lightening our load, or is it quietly making us busier? It reminds me of a rather fascinating phenomenon in economics—the Jevons Paradox.

This logic could not fit my current life more aptly—whether I’m facing high-pressure professional analytical work or the astrophotography I’m most devoted to.

What Is the Jevons Paradox?

The nineteenth-century economist William Stanley Jevons observed a curious phenomenon: as steam engines grew more efficient and burned less fuel per unit of work, total coal consumption rose rather than fell.

This sounds counterintuitive, but the reasoning is actually simple: once “energy” becomes cheap and efficient, all the projects that were once too costly to attempt suddenly become worth doing. Demand is released explosively, and so total consumption climbs instead of dropping.

This is precisely the situation we now face with AI.

I. The “Shift in Shape” of Professional Work: The Floor Drops, the Ceiling Rises

In my own professional field, handling large volumes of technical documents and analyzing complex logic used to take several days just to lay the groundwork. Now, with AI assistance, the preliminary framework and the basic organizing of material can be finished in very little time.

But that doesn’t mean I get to leave work early. Because once the “cost of output” falls, clients’ and companies’ demands for “quality” and “depth” rise right along with it. Where scoring 80 out of 100 once counted as professional, people now expect you to use the time you’ve saved to produce sharper insights and more polished strategies. AI has lowered the floor of a task while raising the ceiling of professionalism without limit.

II. Astrophotography: AI Handles the Stars, Yet I Spend More Time on the Sky

This is something I feel most keenly in astrophotography.

In the past, processing a single deep-sky image—just removing noise, repairing distorted stars, or separating out the nebulosity—meant wrestling with PixInsight for several nights on end. Now, with powerful AI tools like BlurXTerminator, procedures that once ate up hours often reach astonishing results in a matter of seconds.

But has that made me spend less time on my images? Not in the slightest.

Quite the opposite. Because the cost of dealing with the basic problems has dropped, I’ve instead begun chasing ever more extreme detail—delving into more complex narrowband-composition techniques, thinking about how to make my compositions more artistic, even pouring more energy into running my astronomy website and community. Once “execution” becomes cheap, the “aesthetics” and “judgment” inside your head become all the more valuable.

III. The Total Workload Hasn’t Shrunk—Its Density Has Risen

The volume of tasks we can handle at once is now several times what it used to be. AI fends off a lot of the repetitive work for me, and the result is this:

  • Higher decision density: In the same span of time, we have to handle far more high-intensity, critical decisions.
  • From specialist to generalist: Because the barrier to learning new tools has fallen, we’re no longer just a cog in a single part of the process; we now need the mindset of a “director” who marshals all kinds of resources.

Conclusion: Don’t Worry About Having Nothing to Do—Worry About “What to Do”

The Jevons Paradox tells us that technological progress won’t make work disappear; it merely strips the value from “low-efficiency output.”

I often think that the world our children will face will demand not that they turn themselves into precision machines, but that they learn how to marshal machines. For me, AI is my “lever.” Whether I’m facing rigorous professional analysis or chasing distant starlight, it lets me use the same amount of effort to pry loose far bigger dreams.

We won’t stop in our tracks just because we now have an efficient engine—we’ll only run farther, reaching places we once couldn’t even see.
