Anyone who has photographed nebulae has probably had this experience: exposure time isn’t enough and the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is insufficient, yet you badly want to force out those faintly visible dark clouds (for example, IFN—integrated flux nebula, within the Milky Way). The result? The background starts to show patches of stain-like color, one blotch after another.

On English-language forums, this feeling is called “muddy”—a sense of mire, and a wonderfully vivid description.

This kind of “dirtiness” is a bit different from plain background noise; it is a mottled/blotchy phenomenon produced by over-processing. And once you add strong noise reduction on top, it can even give the image an unnatural “plastic” or “waxwork” look; combine that texture with the background noise, and the tonal depth of the celestial subject across the whole photo is ruined.

There’s a saying that often circulates among enthusiasts abroad, which I think puts it very precisely:

“You can’t stretch what isn’t there.”

The meaning: you can’t pull out what was never there to begin with. Forcibly stretching data that doesn’t exist will only spawn a heap of artifacts, not genuine detail.

So the general consensus within the community is usually this—“better black than dirty.” Rather than forcing out a mess of dirty blotches in pursuit of extreme detail, it’s better to keep the background clean and clear.

Understanding where the limits of your data lie is the true key to making a work that stands up to repeated viewing. You can never have too much exposure time, and this truth often feels especially cruel at the post-processing stage: what isn’t in the data, no software—however powerful—can conjure up.
